Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and larger refueling tanks must be stored in another building or complex so as to be more secure. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity should have "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a safe enclosure that could only be accessed by authorized employees. It is important for the safety of the operator, and everyone they work with, that these safety regulations are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself has to be protected. This task can utilize retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be used. It is also necessary to always have a fire extinguisher present at the refueling station. Furthermore, anyone who is operating the fueling station must be trained and also should be trained to safely and effectively use the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA require that everyone who is using an industrial powered forklift or lift truck is trained properly. This training covers both the hands-on training as well as the classroom part. Once the training sessions have been finished, the person needs to be tested to be able to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also covers the correct way of the refueling process of the lift truck. The training also includes precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving and site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS must be located in all facilities where forklifts are operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are utilized on site. This will also include the acid in the lift truck battery, along with the propane which is utilized to refuel the unit.
MSDSs sheets need to be available for all employees all the time. If any exposure incident happens for instance, the individual needs to be evaluated at once. If any medical attention is required, to must be given without any delay. Generally, if you are not sure if medical treatment is needed, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a physician if you truly think it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
