Basic Fuel Types of Forklifts
Powered lift trucks called forklifts are used in almost every industry to move heavy products and materials. The lift truck is a very tough and reliable machine that has become essential tools in lots of construction and warehouse environments. Lift truck models differ depending on the kind of fuel which is used to power the lift truck and the kind of work environment.
Electricity
Electric forklifts are great for work sites that have limited ventilation because they make no exhaust fumes and are relatively quiet. They are designed to be powered by industrial-strength, large batteries. Since the electric lift truck batteries need charging, the worksite will require a charging station. The batteries are tough and could be re-charged up to 1,500 times before they have to be replaced. The charging station must be situated in a ventilated area and include an emergency eyewash station and an acid spill kit.
Propane
Forklifts powered by liquid propane have several advantages over diesel and electric powered machinery making them fairly common in industrial and warehouse settings. Propane engines are much cleaner compared to diesel-powered units. There is no down time required to recharge an industrial battery, and the cost of electricity is more than the cost of propane. A lift truck propane tank can be easily and quickly refueled by changing out the empty tank with a full tank. Normally an off-site supplier refills the empty tank, making refueling really efficient and safe.
Gasoline and Gas
For outdoor applications and rough terrain, the diesel and gas forklifts are the equipment of choice. These machinery are fairly common on construction sites and in lumber yards. Their disadvantages include relatively high maintenance requirements, odorous exhaust and relatively high fuel costs. Their benefits include a longer lifespan compared to other units and reliability in tough conditions. Diesel and gasoline units should be refueled at a supply station on site that meets health and safety policies.
